Cairo, October 26, 2023, The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has expressed his disappointment regarding the UN Security Council's failure to pass two resolutions addressing the situation in Gaza. He emphasized that this failure underscores the lack of genuine international commitment to halt the Israeli occupation's military operations in Gaza, which blatantly violate international humanitarian laws by targeting civilians.
In a statement issued today, Aboul Gheit remarked, "The Security Council's inability to reach a resolution raises significant concerns about its credibility and its capacity to fulfill its primary mission of upholding global peace and security. This is especially evident given that the call for an immediate ceasefire was the primary reason for the resolutions' failure to be adopted."
The spokesperson for the Arab League's secretary-general further clarified that Aboul Gheit had participated in a Security Council discussion two days ago. During his speech, he conveyed the Arab standpoint, which urged an immediate ceasefire, the establishment of a swift and sustainable mechanism for delivering humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, and a rejection of forced population displacement.
