Arar, January 1, 2025 – Handicraft making in the Northern Borders region is traditionally inherited by women and is deeply connected to the region's nature and environment. The craftsmanship in this area showcases various forms of traditional art, most notably Sadu, tent and textile making, and embroidered handicrafts. Some of these pieces require an extensive time investment, with certain works taking up to 10 continuous days to complete. These unique handicrafts are not only a testament to the skill of the artisans but also a reflection of the region's cultural and natural heritage.
These crafts have gained significant visibility at national events and festivals, where women artisans from the region record a remarkable presence. Their works are highly regarded both within the region and beyond, representing the rich cultural history of the Northern Borders. The traditional market in Arar, which has been open for over 10 years, has played an important role in supporting many elderly craftswomen, as well as their granddaughters, by providing dedicated spaces to display their products and handicrafts. This market, along with Al Khozama Hall, has become one of the most important heritage destinations in the region. It not only celebrates the cultural traditions but also introduces families to various courses, including training on buying and selling, saving money, and even e-marketing, allowing these crafts to reach a broader audience.
Several craftswomen shared with the Saudi Press Agency that they inherited their skills from their mothers and have continued the tradition by passing them on to their granddaughters. This exchange of knowledge is vital, especially since marketing these handcrafted items to people across the region opens significant economic opportunities for the artisans. The year 2025 has been designated as the "Year of Handicrafts", a year intended to celebrate the unique cultural value that these handicrafts hold in Saudi culture. This initiative also aims to showcase the creativity of Saudi craftspeople to the international community, ensuring the global recognition of these beautiful, time-honored traditions.
