The Regional Center for Sand and Dust Storm Warning recorded that the percentage of dust and sandstorms in Saudi Arabia decreased during the last month by 80% to become the lowest rate for May during the last 20 years.
The percentage of sand and dust storms decreased varied by region: it was 100% in Qassim and the Northern Border and 80% in Riyadh and the Eastern parts.
The Kingdom's environmental measures through Vision 2030 programs, which aim to reduce them and enhance environmental sustainability, are credited with the drop in dust and sand storms.
The date is June 3, 2024, in Jeddah. The Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center recorded an eighty percent decrease in dust and sand storms in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the past month. This represents the lowest rate for May in twenty years. Jumaan Al-Qahtani, Vice President of the National Center for Meteorology (NCM) and Executive Chief of the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, reported a decrease of 80% in Riyadh and the Eastern regions, but a 100% decrease in Qassim and the Northern Border regions. In Riyadh, the frequency of dust and sand storms decreased by 95%, while in Al-Ahsa, it decreased by 86%, and in Qassim and Arar, it decreased by 100%. Al-Qahtani attributed the drop to the environmental efforts the Kingdom is making through the Vision 2030 programs. These initiatives aim to reduce dust and sand storms and ameliorate their repercussions to promote environmental sustainability and offer a sustainable future for both current and future generations.
