Messi's Japan match sparks controversy among Chinese fans

SINGAPORE — Lionel Messi's recent participation in a friendly match in Japan, following his absence from a scheduled match in Hong Kong, has sparked controversy and conspiracy theories among Chinese fans, leaving many disgruntled.

The state media outlet Global Times has accused Messi and his club, Inter Miami, of having "political motives" and aiming to "embarrass" Hong Kong with their actions. Messi, who cited injury as the reason for not playing in the match in Hong Kong, remained on the bench throughout the game in the Chinese special administrative region.

The disappointment among fans in Hong Kong was palpable, with 38,000 spectators at the Hong Kong Stadium booing and demanding refunds when Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham addressed the crowd after the match. Fans had paid substantial sums to watch Messi, and the sudden announcement of his inability to play left them feeling cheated.

Hong Kong officials, including Kevin Yeung, the secretary for culture, sports, and tourism, expressed frustration at Messi's absence, stating that they were repeatedly assured of his participation until shortly before the match. However, with just 10 minutes remaining, they were informed of Messi's injury.

The disappointment escalated into anger, with figures like Hong Kong lawmaker Regina Ip condemning Messi and Inter Miami for what they perceived as a deliberate snub. The match organizer, Tatler Asia, stated that Messi was contractually obligated to play unless injured, leading them to withdraw their application for a government grant.

In response to the backlash, Messi took to Chinese social media platform Weibo to express regret for his inability to play in Hong Kong due to a groin injury. However, his apology was met with mixed reactions from fans, with some expressing support while others criticized him for perceived insincerity and opportunism.

The incident has underscored the complexities of sports diplomacy and the high expectations placed on international sports stars, particularly in markets like China where Messi enjoys a significant fan base and lucrative endorsement deals.
