Riyadh, December 10, 2024 – The first edition of Sustainability Innovation Week was officially launched today in Riyadh, with Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley presiding over the event. Organized by the Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDIA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, the event, titled "**Innovating for A Sustainable Tomorrow**," is taking place from December 9 to 11, 2024, as part of the UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh. The event is designed to explore cutting-edge, sustainable solutions to address the pressing environmental, water, and agricultural challenges faced by the Kingdom, aligning with the ambitious goals set forth in Saudi Vision 2030.
The opening ceremony highlighted several major initiatives and projects that underscore Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability. Among the significant announcements was the launch of a global water research center, which will collaborate with leading international research institutions to advance water sustainability practices. This initiative is poised to play a critical role in transforming how water is managed in the Kingdom and beyond, utilizing advanced technologies to optimize water resources in an increasingly arid climate.
In another key development, a tripartite agreement was signed between the National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program, the National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidamah), and KAUST. This partnership aims to focus on innovative research into the use of algae-based bio stimulants to enhance soil quality, offering a sustainable solution to improve agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
The National Center for Palms and Dates also unveiled four major research and innovation projects totaling SAR 100 million, which will focus on advancing the sustainable cultivation and production of one of Saudi Arabia’s most important agricultural products. These initiatives reflect the Kingdom’s dedication to both the preservation of its natural resources and the development of innovative technologies that can contribute to the broader global sustainability agenda.
The event provides a platform for over 40 sessions and 70 speakers to discuss the most pressing challenges facing the Kingdom and the world in areas such as environmental sustainability, water management, and agricultural innovation. With representatives from diverse sectors, including research, business, government, and academia, Sustainability Innovation Week offers a unique opportunity for collaboration and knowledge-sharing aimed at shaping a sustainable future.
