Riyadh, March 13, 2024, The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has issued a call to action, urging the promotion of responsible consumption practices as a means to curb meat loss and waste within the Kingdom. This initiative is deemed essential in advancing sustainability and food security objectives outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
Every year, the Kingdom grapples with significant levels of meat loss and waste, presenting a formidable challenge to the agriculture sector. Alarming statistics reveal substantial quantities of wasted poultry, sheep, camel, fish, and other meats. In light of this, the ministry stresses the imperative of heightening awareness regarding the importance of minimizing meat loss and embracing responsible consumption habits among both citizens and residents.
Recognized as a pivotal solution to combat meat loss and waste, responsible consumption practices play a crucial role in reducing overall food wastage while aligning with sustainable development goals (SDGs) and conserving natural resources.
The ministry underscores the significance of prudent planning before food purchases, ensuring alignment with family size and needs to avoid excess. Encouraging moderation and diversity in meals can help prevent unnecessary food wastage. Moreover, the ministry advocates for innovative approaches such as repurposing food leftovers into new recipes and conscientious management of commercial advertisements to discourage impulse purchases.
To further bolster awareness and action on this front, the ministry has initiated various awareness campaigns and educational programs. These initiatives aim to educate the public on the importance of minimizing food waste, improving food storage practices, and enhancing meat quality and preservation techniques.
In addition, the ministry encourages proactive measures such as packaging surplus food for reuse or distribution to disadvantaged families. By fostering a culture of responsible consumption, the Kingdom endeavors to mitigate meat loss, promote sustainable practices, and safeguard its environmental and agricultural resources for future generations.
