Riyadh, December 18, 2024 – In a remarkable initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare services in Yemen, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), in collaboration with the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY), has launched a volunteer medical program specializing in urology and physiotherapy at the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Hospital in Aden. This program is an essential part of ongoing efforts to provide quality healthcare to the people of Yemen, particularly in regions that have faced significant challenges due to conflict.
The volunteer medical program, which officially began in April 2024, encompasses a range of vital medical specialties. These include pediatric cardiac surgery and catheterization, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care, open-heart surgery, neurosurgery, and plastic, burn, and reconstructive surgery. The program is staffed by highly trained Saudi medical professionals, reinforcing the Kingdom's commitment to addressing Yemen's healthcare needs with expert care and innovative treatment options. By providing these critical medical services, the program aims to meet the urgent health demands across all Yemeni governorates, ensuring that the country’s most vulnerable populations receive the care they desperately need.
The success of the program was made possible through the dedication of the SDRPY, which played a key role in facilitating the operational readiness of Prince Mohammed bin Salman Hospital. Spanning an area of 20,000 square meters, the hospital is one of the largest healthcare facilities in the region. With 270 beds and 14 specialized clinics, it also houses a state-of-the-art cardiac center, which is particularly crucial for treating patients with complex heart conditions. Since its opening, the hospital has experienced an overwhelming response, recording more than 1.9 million patient visits from January 2023 to November 2024, highlighting the immense demand for healthcare services in the region.
This initiative is part of a broader, comprehensive effort by the SDRPY to support Yemen's health sector, which includes the construction, rehabilitation, and equipping of hospitals and medical centers across the country. Additionally, the program focuses on training medical personnel, ensuring that Yemen’s healthcare infrastructure is strengthened for the long-term. The SDRPY has been instrumental in executing a wide range of development projects across eight critical sectors, including education, energy, transportation, water, agriculture and fisheries, and government capacity building, with a total of 263 projects currently underway.
By combining state-of-the-art medical care with a long-term commitment to improving Yemen's infrastructure, the SDRPY and KSrelief are not only addressing immediate healthcare needs but also laying the foundation for sustainable development in the country. The continued success of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Hospital and its medical programs is a testament to the Kingdom’s unwavering support for the people of Yemen as they work to rebuild their lives and communities.
