The 16th of June, 2024, Muzdalifah. As a result of the success that it has had in the two previous Hajj seasons, the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) has launched the "Sustainable Ihram" initiative for the third consecutive year during the 1445 AH Hajj season. The purpose of the effort is to reduce pollution during the Hajj season, promote environmental sustainability, and raise awareness about the importance of recycling and reuse in environmental preservation. The "Sustainable Ihram" initiative collects and sorts Hajj pilgrim textile waste for recycling. This allows for the repurposing of extra Ihram clothes, pillows, blankets, and sheets throughout the pilgrimage.
This initiative is a part of MWAN's ongoing efforts to reduce waste generation and raise awareness about the importance of environmental preservation and sustainability at holy sites. In order to contribute to the reduction of waste and the transformation of products into sustainable ones, specialized teams are tasked with the responsibility of implementing the necessary actions for the project in creative ways. The National Center for the Non-Profit Sector, the Environment Fund, and Loop Company are all actively participating in this effort. This is a significant step in ensuring an environmentally sustainable Hajj. MWAN reaffirms its unwavering dedication to enhancing waste management by fostering the development of positive initiatives, ensuring that pilgrims are provided with a clean and secure environment, and putting into practice practices that are both effective and positive throughout the Hajj season.
