RIYADH— Tennis icon Rafael Nadal has assumed the role of ambassador for the Saudi Tennis Federation, marking a pivotal move that underscores the Kingdom's burgeoning interest in developing the sport. The announcement on Monday solidifies Nadal's commitment to advancing tennis growth in Saudi Arabia and globally.
In his new capacity, the 22-time major champion and former world No. 1 will spend part of each year in Saudi Arabia, with a primary focus on training young talents and nurturing an increased interest in tennis throughout the Kingdom. This aligns with the Saudi Tennis Federation's plans to establish a dedicated tennis training academy.
Despite recently withdrawing from the Australian Open due to a muscle injury, Nadal conveyed his excitement about contributing to the growth and progress of tennis in Saudi Arabia. He noted the evident development and advancement across the country and expressed his enthusiasm for being part of this movement.
"I am thrilled to contribute to this movement. Everywhere in Saudi Arabia, you can see development and advancement," said Nadal.
While 2024 is anticipated to be his final year in the professional circuit, Nadal emphasized his dual goals: continuing to play tennis out of love for the game and aiding in the sport's expansion worldwide. He sees significant potential for tennis growth in Saudi Arabia and aims to spread the sport across the nation, instilling positive values in the youth through tennis education.
Areej Matabqani, President of the Saudi Tennis Federation, praised Nadal's influence beyond tennis, describing him as an icon who inspires people globally. She expressed confidence in Nadal's ability to bring a similar level of influence to the Kingdom and expressed the federation's delight in having him as an ambassador.
