National Center for Meteorology warns of moderate to heavy thunderstorms in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, April 19, 2024, The National Center for Meteorology has issued a weather advisory indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy thunderstorms in several regions of Saudi Arabia. These thunderstorms are expected to bring torrential rains accompanied by strong winds and hail showers. The affected areas include parts of Makkah, Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran regions, with the impact extending to the southwestern parts of the Riyadh Region.

Additionally, the advisory notes that visibility may be reduced due to dust in parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, and Tabuk regions.

The weather report details the surface wind patterns across different regions. Over the Red Sea, winds are forecasted to be northwesterly to northerly with speeds ranging from 12 to 35 km/hour, reaching up to 45 km/hour in the northern part. Towards the Bab el-Mandab Strait, winds will shift to southwesterly to southeasterly, reaching speeds of 30 to 50 km/hour.

Wave heights are expected to vary, with waves reaching one to one and a half meters in the northern part of the Red Sea, half a meter to one meter in the central and southern parts, and exceeding two meters near the Bab el-Mandab Strait. The sea conditions will transition from relatively calm to choppy near the Bab el-Mandab Strait.

In the Arabian Gulf, winds will initially be southeasterly to southwesterly, later changing to northerly to northeasterly in the southern part during the evening, with speeds ranging from 10 to 30 km/hour. Wave heights in the Gulf will range from half a meter to a meter, and the sea is expected to remain calm overall.
