Distinctive characteristics set animal eyes apart from their human counterparts. Unlike humans, animals benefit from a wider field of vision. Their eyes are adept at distributing sensory capabilities evenly, allowing them to perceive everything within their visual field. Remarkably, some animals can simultaneously observe events occurring both behind and ahead of them.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Malki, an Assistant Professor at the Biology Department specializing in Zoology Animal Ecology at Taif University, shared insights in a press statement to the Saudi Press Agency. He discussed the varied shapes of pupils in animal eyes and delved into the reasons and purposes behind these differences. Dr. Al-Maliki referenced a 2015 scientific study published in the Science Advances Journal that examined the three primary pupil shapes – vertical, horizontal, and round – found in predators.
According to Dr. Al-Maliki, the study revealed a significant correlation between the shape of wild species' pupils and their ecological niche, encompassing factors such as foraging behavior and the time of day they are active. This scientific exploration sheds light on the remarkable adaptations and evolutionary strategies that have shaped the eyes of animals, enabling them to navigate and thrive within their specific environments.
