NCM issues weather advisory for thunderstorms and floods in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, February 09, 2024, The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) has issued a weather advisory indicating that moderate to heavy thunderstorms, leading to potential floods and accompanied by active winds and periodic cold, are anticipated to persist across various regions of Saudi Arabia. These affected areas include the Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah regions. Additionally, thunderstorm rain is expected in the Najran region, southern parts of Riyadh and Eastern regions, as well as parts of Madinah, Hail, and Al-Jouf regions. Furthermore, fog formation is anticipated in the western and southwestern highlands throughout the country.

The NCM report details the wind patterns over the Red Sea, highlighting southwesterly to northwesterly winds reaching speeds of 10-35 km/h in the northern part and southeasterly to southwesterly winds reaching 20-40 km/h in the central and southern parts, with potential gusts of up to 50 km/h. Rainy thunderclouds may develop in the central and southern regions, contributing to wave heights ranging from one meter to more than one and a half meters, with waves exceeding two and a half meters in some areas. Moderate to wavy sea conditions are anticipated, accompanied by rainy thunderstorms in the central and southern regions.

In the Arabian Gulf, winds are expected to be northerly to northwesterly, with speeds ranging from 15-40 km/h, while wave heights are projected to reach one to two meters. Light to moderate waves are expected in the sea, according to the NCM report.
