Riyadh, January 04, 2024, In a collaborative effort between the National Center for Wildlife and NEOM, a total of 132 species have been reintroduced into the NEOM Nature Reserve, marking a significant step in the rehabilitation and adaptation of these species to their new environment. The released species encompass 80 Arabian sand gazelles, 12 mountain gazelles, 12 ibexes, and 28 Arabian Oryx, highlighting a diverse range of fauna.
Dr. Mohammed Qurban, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife, explained that this release is part of a comprehensive program aimed at preserving and relocating endangered species native to the region. He emphasized the program's focus on ecosystem rehabilitation and the enhancement of biodiversity throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with the Saudi Green Initiative and the national strategy for environmental conservation, contributing significantly to the realization of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 objectives. Dr. Qurban underscored the pivotal role this program plays in the broader context of wildlife preservation and the overall sustainability of natural ecosystems.
Since its establishment, the National Center for Wildlife has implemented comprehensive strategies to safeguard wildlife, conserve biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and promote sustainability. As the designated national authority overseeing wildlife conservation and development, the center is actively involved in reintroducing endangered species to their native habitats. It employs advanced monitoring and surveying techniques, including population tracking, data collection, and risk assessment, to address the challenges faced by wildlife.
Encompassing an expansive area of 25,000 square kilometers, the NEOM Nature Reserve is dedicated to establishing a balanced ecosystem and fostering biodiversity through innovative solutions and cutting-edge technologies in collaboration with research institutions.
