Jeddah, January 17, 2025 – Hissein Brahim Taha, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has warmly welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, hailing it as a significant step toward ending the ongoing violence and suffering in the region. In a statement issued today, Taha expressed his hopes that the truce would pave the way for a lasting and comprehensive cessation of Israeli military actions in Gaza and contribute to long-term peace and stability for the Palestinian people.
Taha emphasized that the ceasefire agreement should be the beginning of a broader resolution that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict. He called for the immediate return of displaced persons to their homes, the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza, and the unrestricted and sufficient delivery of humanitarian aid to all regions within the Strip. These measures, he stressed, are crucial for alleviating the suffering of innocent civilians and restoring dignity to the Palestinian people.
The OIC Secretary-General further appealed to the international community, urging global powers and institutions to fulfill their obligations by ensuring the implementation of United Nations resolutions concerning the Palestinian cause. Taha reminded the world of the importance of upholding international law and human rights principles in the pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people.
At the heart of Taha’s call was the need to end the Israeli occupation and to enable the Palestinian people to reclaim their rightful sovereignty. He reiterated that a peaceful resolution can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This, he said, remains the cornerstone of the Palestinian struggle for self-determination and a peaceful coexistence with Israel.
The statement by the OIC Secretary-General reflects the organization’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its commitment to advocating for the rights of Palestinians on the international stage. As the ceasefire holds, Taha’s words underscore the importance of continued diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting peace that guarantees justice, security, and human rights for all parties involved.
