OIC backs South Africa's ICJ petition accusing Israel of Palestinian genocide

Jeddah, December 30, 2023, The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed its support for the Republic of South Africa's petition to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), wherein Israel, identified as the occupying force, is accused of committing genocide against the Palestinian people.

Affirming its stance, the OIC has emphasized that Israel's actions, including the indiscriminate targeting of the civilian population, the infliction of casualties on tens of thousands of Palestinians—primarily women and children—forced displacement, obstruction of access to basic necessities and humanitarian aid, and the deliberate destruction of buildings, health facilities, educational institutions, and religious establishments, collectively amount to the commission of genocide.

The Organization has urged the ICJ to promptly respond to the petition and initiate urgent procedures to halt the ongoing genocide perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces in the occupied Palestinian territories. This call underscores the gravity of the situation and emphasizes the need for swift international intervention to address the alleged crimes against humanity.

By welcoming and endorsing South Africa's legal action, the OIC underscores its commitment to advocating for justice and accountability in the face of what it perceives as systematic and severe violations of human rights. The organization's appeal to the ICJ serves as a diplomatic initiative to address the complex and longstanding conflict in the region, seeking a legal resolution to the accusations of genocide and the associated humanitarian crises in the occupied Palestinian territories.
