OIC Condemns Israel’s Decision to Confiscate UNRWA Headquarters in Occupied Jerusalem

On October 13, 2024, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation authorities’ illegal decision to confiscate the land on which the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is located in occupied Jerusalem, intending to transform it into a settlement outpost. The OIC characterized this action as part of a broader pattern of illegal Israeli measures designed to undermine the existence, mandate, and activities of UNRWA, violating both the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.

The OIC underscored that the series of illegal measures, which include discussions surrounding invalid draft laws aimed at delegitimizing UNRWA, systematic attacks on its facilities, and the killing and wounding of hundreds of workers and displaced persons in its schools, amount to violations of international law. These actions constitute crimes that necessitate thorough investigation and accountability.

Furthermore, the OIC highlighted the essential role of UNRWA in promoting stability in the region, noting its critical function in providing basic services and humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees, particularly in the Gaza Strip. The organization reiterated its belief that UNRWA is indispensable for ensuring the well-being and support of these vulnerable populations.

In light of these developments, the OIC called upon the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by compelling Israel to respect the mandate granted to UNRWA by the United Nations General Assembly. The organization urged for the protection of UNRWA’s facilities, employees, and the displaced persons within its schools, demanding an immediate cessation of all attacks and illegal measures against the agency.
