Doha, October 3, 2023, The Ninth Ministerial Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Food Security and Agricultural Development emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration within the OIC framework in the food and agricultural sector. The goal is to create more resilient food systems and achieve sustainable development objectives through knowledge sharing and best practices. Enhancing food security and productivity is paramount.
Operating under the theme "Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 in the OIC Member States," the conference underscored the necessity of establishing the required financial infrastructure and legal frameworks to bolster the financial inclusion of farmers. Support for farmers will encompass providing access to financial products and services, including Islamic finance models that enhance economic resilience and boost production and income.
The conference's final statement also emphasized the significance of cooperation and coordination with relevant OIC institutions. This includes conducting a comprehensive study, developing a business model, and creating a cooperation framework in the realm of contract farming, while assessing the needs and capabilities of member states. The outcomes of these efforts will be presented for consideration and decision at the next conference session.
Furthermore, the conference delegates commended Qatar for hosting the event, recognizing its pivotal role in supporting initiatives to enhance food security among OIC Member States.
