Jeddah, March 29, 2024, The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) permanent representatives to the United Nations convened in New York City on Wednesday, under the leadership of Mauritania's representative, Sidi Mohamed Laghdaf. This gathering followed the adoption of Resolution 2728 by the UN Security Council on March 25.
Deeming the council's resolution a landmark step, the group hailed it as a significant shift towards establishing a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and halting the ongoing civilian suffering caused by Israeli aggression. They emphasized the urgent need to implement the resolution swiftly to address the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians in the enclave.
Expressing satisfaction with the growing collaboration among OIC member states, the League of Arab States, and the Non-Aligned Movement, the permanent representatives called upon the international community and Security Council members to ensure the effective implementation of the resolution.
Deliberations at the meeting centered on implementing decisions made during the joint extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit held in Riyadh on November 11, 2023, and the special session of foreign ministers' meeting in Jeddah on March 5, 2024. Of particular focus was the expansion of international recognition of the state of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. OIC representatives reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to intensify consultations and engage with relevant stakeholders to advance this objective.
Acknowledging the efforts of the ministerial committee established by the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit, chaired by the Kingdom, the group commended initiatives towards granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations as a crucial step towards realizing the two-state solution. They pledged to continue working diligently towards these objectives without delay.
