Dammam, January 17, 2024, The Oil Park Development Company (OPDC), a wholly-owned closed joint-stock company by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the developer of THE RIG, has unveiled an ambitious vision for adventure tourism with the launch of THE RIG Masterplan. This initiative aims to redefine the tourism landscape and aligns with PIF's strategy outlined in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, focusing on driving tourism sector growth, generating employment opportunities for local talent, attracting investments, and diversifying the economy.
THE RIG CEO, Raed Bakhrji, outlined the details of the project, stating that the adventure tourism and hospitality experience will span over 300,000 square meters, situated 40km from the coastline near Al Juraid Island and Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf. Bakhrji emphasized that THE RIG is anticipated to attract over 900,000 annual visitors by 2032, catering to a diverse audience, including domestic, regional, and international tourists with varying interests such as adrenaline seekers, explorers, balanced holiday-makers, and relaxation enthusiasts.
The offerings at THE RIG include three hotels with a total of 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, an extreme sports and adventure park, a world-class marina, and helipads. The destination is set to feature a range of water activities, including a diving center, an amusement park, a splash park, an E-sports center, an immersive theater, and a multi-purpose arena.
Bakhrji highlighted that THE RIG draws inspiration from offshore oil platforms, celebrating Saudi Arabia's oil and gas legacy. This unique concept aims to create an exceptional and unparalleled experience, positioning THE RIG as a must-visit destination. The project reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings and establishing itself as a leading adventure tourism destination on the global stage.
