Pakistan tragedy: 26 lives lost in heavy rain and thunderstorms

Islamabad, March 03, 2024, Tragedy struck Pakistan as at least 26 individuals lost their lives due to the devastating impact of unusually heavy rain and thunderstorms, according to officials quoted by dpa on Sunday.

The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bore the brunt of the calamity, with at least 21 casualties, including women and children, reported in rain-related incidents over the past 48 hours. Simultaneously, the southwestern province of Balochistan witnessed five fatalities, including a woman and three children.

The havoc caused roofs and walls to collapse, resulting in injuries to more than 50 people, including women and children, as reported by the provincial disaster management authorities for both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

In a separate incident earlier in the week, approximately 10,000 residents of the coastal town of Gwadar, situated in the southwest of the country, were evacuated by rescue teams in response to heavy rainfall that submerged the area. The unfolding natural disasters highlight the urgent need for coordinated efforts in response, rescue, and relief to mitigate the impact on affected communities.
