Turaif, October 20, 2024 – The beginning of the peregrine falcon hunting season in early October has ignited a wave of excitement among falconry enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia's Northern Borders region. This annual event coincides with the arrival of migratory birds, drawing experienced falconers and newcomers alike to the vast open landscapes. Hunters, eager to partake in the time-honored tradition, meticulously prepare their camps and equipment, which includes specialized nets and decoy birds, in anticipation of the hunt.
The Hamad area, known for its heightened falcon activity during this time of year, becomes a focal point of hunting activities as peregrine falcons make their seasonal passage through the region. The atmosphere buzzes with anticipation, and falconry camps are set up across the landscape, reflecting the deep cultural importance of this practice. Falcon hunting is not merely a sport but a symbol of heritage and tradition for many in the Northern Borders.
Atta Allah Rishoud Al-Hazimi, a veteran falconer, shared insights into the rigorous preparations undertaken by those who participate. "We fully equip our camps, setting up nets designed for different types of birds. Our day begins just after dawn prayer, as falcons, particularly peregrine falcons, are still hungry and more susceptible to capture at this time. The morning session typically concludes by 9 or 10 a.m., and we rest until the afternoon."
The falconers return to their camps for a shorter hunting session in the late afternoon, usually before sunset, when the falcons descend from their high-altitude flights. This two-part daily hunting routine is carefully planned to maximize success and minimize stress on the birds.
For many, falcon hunting transcends the mere thrill of the chase. It is a cherished opportunity to reconnect with their cultural roots and the timeless traditions of their ancestors. The season represents a blend of adventure, skill, and deep respect for nature, drawing families and communities together in a celebration of this ancient art.
