March 25, 2025, LISBON: Portugal secured a spot in the Nations League semifinals, beating Denmark 5-3 on aggregate with a 5-2 victory after extra time in the second leg.
Portugal will face the tournament hosts, Germany, in June's semifinals after overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit. Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty but later scored a vital goal, while Francisco Trincao's late brace sealed the win for Roberto Martinez's team.
Ronaldo's penalty was saved by Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel, but Portugal managed to equalize on aggregate when Joachim Andersen scored an own goal in the 38th minute. Denmark regained the advantage with a header from Rasmus Kristensen on 56 minutes. Ronaldo then redeemed himself with a goal, but Christian Eriksen put Denmark back ahead shortly after.
Trincao’s late strike forced extra time, where he scored again to give Portugal the lead, and assisted Goncalo Ramos for the final goal. Denmark fought valiantly, but Portugal’s relentless attack saw them through to the semifinals. Having won the inaugural Nations League in 2019, Portugal aims to become the first team to win the trophy twice.
