Riyadh, November 30, 2024 — Dr. Rumaih bin Muhammad Al-Rumaih, General President of the Saudi Railways Organization, delivered a detailed and forward-looking presentation on the Kingdom's public transport transformation project at the 2025 Budget Forum organized by the Ministry of Finance. This comprehensive overview underscored the nation's ambitious plans to overhaul its public transportation system, marking a significant investment in the future of both the Kingdom and its citizens.
Dr. Al-Rumaih emphasized that the ongoing transformation of the public transport sector is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy, reduce the nation's carbon footprint, and improve the quality of life for its people. With a focus on enhancing safety, accessibility, and sustainability, the project aims to provide an integrated transportation network that spans the Kingdom, supporting not only urban development but also intercity and inter-governorate connectivity.
Since the inception of Vision 2030, the public transport infrastructure has expanded significantly, reaching 19 cities and governorates. Public transport services are currently operational in 14 of these areas, with plans underway to extend services to five more, thus improving mobility across the Kingdom. Dr. Al-Rumaih highlighted that these efforts have already resulted in a dramatic reduction in urban accidents, with a decrease of up to 80%, reflecting the safety benefits brought about by the expansion of public transportation options.
The growth of the Kingdom’s transportation network is nothing short of remarkable. Dr. Al-Rumaih detailed the expansion efforts, noting that the network now covers more than 70% of Saudi Arabia’s landmass, reaching over 200 cities and governorates. The system offers 500 daily trips across 104 routes, with 259 strategically placed stops, contributing to a total network length that exceeds 84,903 kilometers. This expansive network plays a pivotal role in improving connectivity, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing the overall mobility of the Saudi population.
In addition to these infrastructure advancements, Dr. Al-Rumaih also emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to environmental sustainability within the public transport sector. A key part of this commitment is the introduction of electric buses, which are already in operation as part of the ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. Furthermore, studies are currently underway to explore the viability of hydrogen-powered buses, a forward-thinking initiative that seeks to harness alternative, clean energy solutions for the future of Saudi Arabia's public transport. These innovations aim to address the Kingdom’s unique environmental and geographical challenges while contributing to global sustainability goals.
Dr. Al-Rumaih concluded his presentation by reiterating that the transformation of Saudi Arabia’s public transportation system is more than just an infrastructure project—it's a strategic, long-term investment in the Kingdom’s social, economic, and environmental future. Through the implementation of advanced technologies, sustainable practices, and a focus on safety and accessibility, the public transport sector is poised to play a central role in shaping the Kingdom's future, enhancing the lives of its citizens, and supporting the objectives of Vision 2030.
As Saudi Arabia continues its ambitious journey toward modernization and sustainability, the public transport transformation project stands as a prime example of the Kingdom’s commitment to building a more connected, efficient, and environmentally responsible society for future generations.
