Quba Mosque: First mosque built by Prophet Muhammad after migration

Ahmed Saleh

Madinah, March 12, 2024, The Quba Mosque in Madinah holds a profound significance in Islamic history, being the first mosque constructed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) following his migration from Makkah. Its foundation, laid by the Prophet himself, with subsequent completion by his companions, underscores its sacred importance.

Situated just a few kilometers from the revered Prophet's Mosque, Quba Mosque continues to serve as a focal point for worship in Madinah, drawing residents and visitors alike due to its historical significance and the spiritual virtue associated with praying there. It stands as one of the largest mosques in Madinah, hosting all daily prayers, including the special Friday and Eid prayers.

Throughout history, the mosque has undergone several renovations to preserve its heritage. In 1388 AH, external wall restorations and expansion of the northern side were undertaken. Subsequently, in 1405 AH, under the directive of King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, a comprehensive rebuilding and expansion project was initiated while meticulously preserving its historical features.

Before this expansion, the mosque's area was limited to 1,600 square meters. However, with the reconstruction, the prayer hall alone reached an impressive 5,035 square meters, with the entire complex covering an area of 13,500 square meters. Additionally, facilities such as a library and market area were incorporated to enhance visitor experience.

Building upon this legacy, during the reign of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, announced the most extensive expansion project in the history of Quba Mosque. Named in honor of King Salman, this ambitious endeavor aims to increase the mosque's total area tenfold, reaching 50,000 square meters, with the capacity to accommodate up to 66,000 worshippers. This monumental project signifies a pivotal milestone in the journey of Quba Mosque, further solidifying its stature as a revered historical and spiritual landmark.
