Rabat Named World Book Capital for 2026

Rabat, October 23, 2024 — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially designated Rabat, Morocco, as the World Book Capital for 2026. This prestigious title comes in response to a recommendation from the World Book Capital Advisory Committee and recognizes the city’s significant efforts to promote the book industry and encourage a culture of reading.

In its announcement, UNESCO praised Rabat for its dedication to fostering literary culture, noting the presence of 54 publishing houses that contribute to the vibrant literary scene. Additionally, Rabat is home to Africa’s third-largest international book fair, which serves as a vital platform for writers, publishers, and readers to connect and celebrate literature.

As World Book Capital, Rabat is committed to launching a range of initiatives aimed at improving access to books across various communities. The city plans to bolster its local publishing sector and enhance literacy programs for all age groups and demographics, promoting reading as a fundamental component of personal and societal development. These initiatives are expected to not only serve the local population but also extend their impact on an international scale.

Celebrations marking Rabat’s designation as the World Book Capital are set to kick off on April 23, 2026, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day. This alignment underscores the importance of literature in promoting understanding and dialogue among cultures. The festivities are anticipated to include a series of events, such as book fairs, reading campaigns, author workshops, and educational programs designed to engage the public and inspire a love of reading.

Rabat's designation as the World Book Capital reflects its rich cultural heritage and commitment to advancing the literary arts. This honor presents an opportunity for the city to shine on the global stage, fostering a deeper appreciation for books and literature while solidifying its role as a center of literary excellence in the Arab world and beyond. As the city prepares for this significant milestone, it looks forward to a vibrant celebration of literature that will resonate with readers and writers alike, both in Morocco and internationally.
