RCU and Estia inaugurate Hegra Conservation Project, preserving AlUla's cultural heritage

Ahmed Saleh

AlUla, January 23, 2024, The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has inaugurated the Hegra Conservation Project in partnership with the renowned Italian company Estia, bringing three decades of experience in the preservation of cultural heritage to this collaboration. Hegra, the first Saudi archaeological site listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, is at the center of this initiative, aligning with the RCU's commitment to restoring and safeguarding the rich antiquities found in the region.

Under the guidance of Prof. Mauro Matteini, former director of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), a team comprising scientists, experts, and cultural heritage conservation technicians has embarked on a comprehensive investigation into the factors contributing to the deterioration of the ancient carved tombs in Hegra, which boast a history spanning over 2000 years.

The primary objective of the Hegra Conservation Project is to discern the root causes of degradation and formulate effective measures to ensure the long-term preservation of these invaluable relics. The project is anticipated to conclude by the year 2025.

The initiative not only serves the critical purpose of conserving the historical treasures within AlUla but also aims to showcase the beauty of these antiquities to a wider audience. Interested individuals can explore the technical and scientific aspects of the conservation efforts on the project's website (www.hegraconservation.com) and its social media platforms.

Hegra Archaeological Site stands as one of the Kingdom's most distinguished historical landmarks, with its carved tombs dating back to the Nabatean era. The Hegra Conservation Project underscores the significance of collaborative international efforts in preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage of this remarkable region.
