RCU expands Arabian Leopard Breeding Center in Taif, aligning with Vision 2030 conservation goals

AlUla, December 07, 2023, The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has recently welcomed a new addition to the Arabian Leopard Breeding Center (ALBC) in Taif. This initiative is a pivotal component of the RCU's commitment to safeguarding and preserving the Arabian leopard, ultimately contributing to the ecological equilibrium in the AlUla region and aligning with the ambitious goals outlined in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.

This latest arrival marks the introduction of the second Arabian leopard to the breeding program, emphasizing the RCU's dedication to enhancing genetic diversity within the captive population. As part of a comprehensive breeding agreement, the RCU has expressed its willingness to potentially transfer leopard cubs to other breeding centers across the peninsula in the future. This strategic collaboration aims to foster knowledge exchange and share expertise in the intricate process of leopard breeding.

The first leopard, known as Al Ain, made its way to the ALBC from the Al Bustan Zoological Center in the UAE in April of the previous year. After a seamless integration process, Al Ain became an integral part of the ALBC's leopard population in July. The continuous expansion of the breeding program underscores the RCU's proactive approach to conservation and its commitment to the long-term sustainability of the Arabian leopard population.
