Tabuk, December 14, 2023, Red Sea Global (RSG), the visionary multi-project developer behind some of the world's most ambitious regenerative tourism destinations, is pioneering the use of SubSLAM, an advanced photogrammetry technology developed by marine robotics leader VAARST. This groundbreaking technology is currently employed to create high-resolution, 3D digital representations of the coral reefs and essential habitats in Al Wajh Lagoon.
SubSLAM stands out as the most precise underwater 3D real-time measurement system available today. Developed by VAARST, its photogrammetry and real-time intelligent data collection system are revolutionizing the mapping and preservation of underwater ecosystems. This initiative represents a pioneering effort in Saudi Arabia and underscores RSG's unwavering commitment to sustainable and regenerative tourism practices.
The capabilities of SubSLAM allow for accurate quantification and identification of corals and underwater objects through advanced 4K sensors. This technology guides remotely operated vehicles in conducting detailed habitat inspections, facilitating the comparison of current and past imagery to monitor changes and promote biodiversity.
In collaboration with King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, RSG's scientists leverage SubSLAM's capabilities to rapidly identify and classify marine species, streamlining the process without the need for labor-intensive reviews of hours of footage. The technology also mitigates the risk of human error due to fatigue.
This proactive approach is crucial for addressing pressing challenges such as coral bleaching and invasive species, ensuring the Red Sea's unparalleled beauty and biodiversity are preserved for future visitors.
As part of its mission for a regenerative future, RSG recently unveiled its Coral Commitment, a bold initiative aimed at safeguarding and regenerating corals not only in the Red Sea but beyond. This significant announcement, made during COP28 in Dubai aboard the Ocean Xplorer vessel, included the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP). Concurrently, RSG introduced the new brand for its marine life institute at Amaala, Corallium, and shared the successful outcomes of the initial phase of its Coral Gardening Pilot Project, marking a substantial stride in marine conservation.
Recently welcoming its first guests, the Red Sea destination features two open-for-booking hotels and the fully operational Red Sea International Airport, which has been receiving regular flights since September. By its completion in 2030, the destination will encompass 50 resorts, providing over 8,000 hotel rooms and more than 1,000 residential properties spread across 22 islands and six inland sites. The comprehensive destination will also include luxury marinas, golf courses, entertainment, food and beverage options, and an array of leisure facilities.
