Riyadh, April 17, 2024, The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program "Reef Saudi" has announced a significant investment in Saudi Arabia's honey sector, marking a strategic move towards bolstering agricultural sustainability in the Kingdom.
Since 2020, "Reef Saudi" has dedicated SAR140 million to support the honey industry, benefiting over 10,584 individuals across various rural regions. This investment has yielded tangible results, with honey production witnessing a remarkable upsurge, reaching 3,120 tons annually in 2023, marking a substantial 41% increase from 2021. With an eye on the future, the program has set an ambitious target of achieving an annual honey production of 7,500 tons by 2026.
"Reef Saudi" has adopted a comprehensive approach to fortify the honey sector and enhance the local bee population, ultimately aiming for self-sufficiency in honey production. The program extends critical services to beekeepers in rural areas, including inspection, guidance, and disease prevention measures to safeguard the Kingdom's bee wealth.
The program's initiatives span various crucial projects, including the establishment of queen bee breeding stations and package production facilities in key regions such as Hail, Najran, Jazan, Madinah, Tabuk, and Taif. Additionally, "Reef Saudi" has supplied three mobile laboratories to conduct on-site examinations and diagnoses of bee diseases and pests, along with deploying four mobile clinics equipped with essential tools for field examinations to ensure optimal bee health.
Beyond its direct impact on the honey industry, "Reef Saudi" plays a pivotal role in promoting environmental sustainability and diversifying Saudi Arabia's agricultural production base. By empowering rural communities and fostering small-scale farmers' development, the program significantly contributes to national food security goals while simultaneously creating employment opportunities and enhancing agricultural capabilities.
