In a notable diplomatic move, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is actively participating in the 28th Conference of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, ongoing in The Hague from November 27 to December 1, 2023. Leading the delegation is Saudi Ambassador to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ziad bin Maashi Al-Atiyah.
Al-Atiyah emphasized Saudi Arabia's commitment to enhancing international collaboration for the prohibition and prevention of weapons of mass destruction. He called for concerted efforts to establish the Middle East as a region devoid of such weaponry. Underscoring the pivotal role of the Chemical Weapons Convention in global initiatives to ban weapons of mass destruction, Al-Atiyah highlighted its significance in reinforcing international peace and security.
Furthermore, Al-Atiyah condemned Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, denouncing it as a flagrant violation of international law. He argued that such actions not only undermine the credibility of the international community but also inflict deep wounds on humanity's trust in a world governed by law. Al-Atiyah urged for an immediate ceasefire and concerted efforts to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
