GENEVA — Saudi Arabia has issued a collective global appeal for improved safeguards for children in the online world during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Representing over 70 nations, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international bodies in Geneva, stressed the pressing need for capacity enhancement and worldwide collaboration to protect children in cyberspace.
In his address, Ambassador Khothaila emphasized that ensuring children’s safety online transcends mere technical issues, representing a crucial commitment to global stability and sustainability. The statement highlighted stark inequalities in resources and infrastructure, which leave many developing nations unprepared to tackle the escalating digital dangers threatening children. The ambassador advocated for deeper partnerships between governments and private entities to devise practical, effective, and long-lasting solutions. He further urged the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to offer tailored technical assistance to nations in need — especially in crafting national laws, training law enforcement personnel, and establishing reliable systems for reporting abuse.
The statement concluded by underscoring the collective global duty to foster a secure digital space that respects children’s rights and dignity. It also spotlighted the Kingdom’s pioneering role in this effort, exemplified by the recent initiation of the Child Protection in Cyberspace (CPC) Global Summit by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman — a program designed to consolidate international action against online risks to children.
