Saudi Arabia celebrated World Quantum Day with a scientific event focusing on quantum technologies and education's role in their adoption

Riyadh, April 18, 2024, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently commemorated World Quantum Day with a distinguished scientific event aimed at delving into the future prospects of quantum technologies, their practical applications, and the pivotal role of education and awareness in fostering their widespread adoption.

The event, held on April 17-18, was organized by the Kingdom's Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR KSA) in collaboration with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and King Salman Science Oasis (KSSO). It brought together leading figures in research, development, and innovation spheres to explore the transformative potential of quantum technologies across various industries.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Basma Al-Buhairan, Managing Director of C4IR KSA, highlighted the event's significance in showcasing the achievements and future prospects of quantum technologies in tackling complex challenges across industries. She also unveiled the center's new project focused on the quantum economy, which aims to foster collaboration among the public, private, and academic sectors within the Kingdom.

Dr. Ibtesam Badhrees, a Research Associate Professor at KACST and Consultant at KSSO, outlined five quantum physics and quantum computing programs designed by the oasis as part of the World Quantum Day celebrations. These programs covered diverse topics such as the history of the Industrial Revolution, the future implications of quantum physics, quantum theatre, and quantum computing.

The event featured insightful panel discussions, including "Promoting Quantum Science, Technology, and Innovation in KSA," which explored the opportunities and challenges of quantum technologies for economic growth and sustainability. Another discussion focused on the role of education and awareness in driving quantum advancements and enhancing public understanding of complex quantum concepts.

The event's culmination was marked by a session titled "Saudi Arabia and the Rise of Quantum Economy," where participants explored strategies for positioning the Kingdom as a leader in emerging technologies, leveraging quantum computing for accelerated innovation, attracting global investors and talent, and addressing national challenges through quantum solutions.

Furthermore, the event showcased an exhibition featuring local and international companies presenting the latest advancements in quantum technologies, particularly in telecommunications, computing, and sensors. Live and virtual demonstrations were also conducted to illustrate the fundamental concepts of quantum science and its potential impact on daily life.
