Cartagena, November 16, 2024 – Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al Khateeb chaired Saudi Arabia’s delegation at the 122nd session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, which took place in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, from November 13 to 15. This event marked the conclusion of Saudi Arabia’s two-year term as the chair of the Executive Council, a period during which the Kingdom made significant contributions to global tourism development and solidified its position as a key player in the sector.
Under Saudi Arabia’s leadership, the UN Tourism Executive Council embarked on a comprehensive development program designed to foster growth in tourism through investments, education, youth empowerment, and sustainability initiatives. These efforts have yielded positive economic outcomes while also creating a lasting societal impact within the global tourism sector. Saudi Arabia's approach emphasized collaboration, innovation, and forward-thinking policies, which have helped propel tourism into becoming a vital engine for economic growth globally.
Opening the session, Al Khateeb reiterated the importance of mutual cooperation among council members, highlighting the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, sustainable tourism industry. In his speech, he stated, "This gathering once again reaffirms our shared vision for the continuous prosperity of global tourism." He stressed that the session served as a platform to explore innovative models for sustaining the tourism sector, creating investment opportunities, and forging strategic partnerships that would benefit both developed and emerging markets.
Al Khateeb also acknowledged the Kingdom’s achievements during its tenure, noting that tourism had emerged as one of the world’s most important economic sectors, with expectations to contribute 10% to global GDP in 2024. This contribution, estimated at US$11 trillion in annual spending, reflects the sector's resilience and potential for continued growth. Factors such as increased air connectivity, the surge in post-pandemic travel, and the expanding middle-class tourist base in emerging markets are expected to further fuel the sector’s expansion in the coming years.
As Saudi Arabia concluded its leadership role in the UN Tourism Executive Council, Al Khateeb expressed hope for the continued momentum of the initiatives established during its tenure. He said, "As we pass the responsibility to the next chair, we hope that momentum will continue through forward-thinking policies, investments, and global cooperation." His closing remarks underscored the Kingdom’s dedication to promoting sustainable tourism growth and international collaboration as essential elements in shaping the future of the sector.
With Saudi Arabia’s leadership leaving a lasting impact, the tourism sector is positioned to play an even more prominent role in shaping global economic recovery and development. Through strategic initiatives and a focus on inclusivity, the Kingdom has reinforced its commitment to shaping a prosperous future for global tourism.
