Nouakchott, October 20, 2024 – The inaugural edition of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Competition for Memorizing the Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah in West Africa concluded yesterday in Mauritania, marking a significant milestone in promoting Islamic education in the region. The closing ceremony took place in the capital, Nouakchott, and was attended by esteemed guests, including Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Raqabi, the Saudi Ambassador to Mauritania; Sheikh Ahmed Ould Murabit, the Grand Mufti of Mauritania; various Mauritanian officials; and notable Arab and Muslim diplomatic figures.
In a recorded message delivered during the ceremony, Sheikh Dr. Abdullatif Al Alsheikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani for hosting this prestigious competition. The event witnessed the participation of 136 contestants hailing from 16 West African countries, showcasing their dedication and passion for memorizing the Quran and the Sunnah.
Ambassador Al-Raqabi underscored the competition's vital role in fostering a culture of Quranic memorization and recitation across the Islamic world. He noted that such initiatives not only enhance individual spiritual development but also strengthen communal ties among Muslims, promoting unity and shared values within the broader Islamic community.
Dr. Beyte Allah Ahmed Leswed, Secretary General of the Mauritanian Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Original Education, commended Saudi Arabia's leadership in supporting Quran and Sunnah memorization efforts. He praised the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to serving Islam and Muslims globally, highlighting its initiatives aimed at nurturing a new generation of scholars and practitioners of Islamic teachings.
