Riyadh, October 26, 2024 — Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has announced the successful expansion of Manilkara zapota cultivation across several regions, including Jazan, the Eastern Region, and Aseer. Originally from Central America, the evergreen Manilkara zapota tree thrives in the Kingdom's hot, dry climates and can withstand low temperatures, making it a resilient addition to Saudi Arabia’s agricultural landscape.
The Manilkara zapota, a versatile tree reaching up to 20 meters in height, produces fruit that supports a range of industries, including dairy production and dental materials. This expansion provides significant economic benefits and supports Saudi Arabia's goal of agricultural self-sufficiency and economic diversification.
Beyond its economic value, the cultivation of the Manilkara zapota enhances agricultural biodiversity and promotes sustainability, aligning with the Kingdom’s national strategy to prioritize resilient and productive crops suited to local climates. This step marks a milestone in advancing the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and environmental stewardship.
