Saudi Arabia reaffirms commitment to sustainable fisheries and fishermen's welfare

Riyadh, October 05, 2023, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has underscored its commitment to promoting sustainable fisheries and supporting the livelihoods of fishermen. During the recent General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) High-level conference on MedFish4Ever initiatives held in Malta, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Engineer Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mushaiti, delivered a speech on behalf of Saudi Arabia.

In his address, Al-Mushaiti highlighted the Kingdom's dedication to developing aquaculture as a vital component of Saudi Vision 2030 and its strong endorsement of the Malta Declaration. He further emphasized that Saudi Arabia's decision to join the GFCM in 2021 aimed at fostering collaborative relationships with specialized organizations and stakeholders involved in the sustainable development of aquaculture.

Al-Mushaiti also noted that in 2022, the nation's domestic aquaculture production reached approximately 120,000 tons, with ambitious plans to increase this figure to approximately half a million tons in the coming years. This reflects Saudi Arabia's proactive approach to enhancing its aquaculture industry and promoting sustainable practices in the sector.
