Saudi Arabia's Museums Commission Signs Executive Program with the Shanghai Museum of the People's Republic of China

Beijing, October 19, 2024 — In a significant step toward enhancing cultural exchange and cooperation, Saudi Arabia’s Museums Commission has signed an Executive Program with the prestigious Shanghai Museum during the recent visit of Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud to China. This initiative underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen their cultural ties and explore collaborative opportunities in the arts.

The cooperation is anchored in the Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation, which was signed on March 27, 2024, between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This Executive Program aims to further solidify the cultural relationship between the two countries, creating a framework for mutual engagement in various cultural projects.

Key areas of cooperation outlined in the Executive Program include:

1. Long-term Loan of Artworks and Archaeological Collections: Under this initiative, Saudi Arabia will receive long-term loans of significant artworks and archaeological collections from China. These valuable pieces are set to be displayed in museums across Saudi Arabia, enriching the cultural landscape and offering local audiences an opportunity to engage with Chinese heritage.

2. “Art of the Kingdom” Exhibition at the Shanghai Museum: As a highlight of the collaboration, Saudi Arabia will host the “Art of the Kingdom” (Fan Al Mamlaka) exhibition at the Shanghai Museum in the coming years. This exhibition will showcase the contemporary art practices of Saudi Arabia, providing Chinese audiences with a unique glimpse into the Kingdom's evolving arts and cultural scene, and fostering greater appreciation for its diverse artistic expressions.

3. Exploration of Future Areas of Cooperation: Both parties have expressed their intent to explore additional avenues for collaboration within the framework of this implementation plan. This openness aims to promote further cooperation and development of cultural projects that reflect the rich heritage and modern innovations of both nations.

The signing of this Executive Program marks a pivotal milestone in cultural exchange between Saudi Arabia and China, highlighting the shared commitment to fostering international cultural dialogue. Through this collaboration, both countries are poised to not only share their vibrant cultural heritages but also create new opportunities for future cultural projects, enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation.

This partnership aligns with broader cultural and diplomatic goals, illustrating the importance of cultural diplomacy in today’s interconnected world. As Saudi Arabia and China embark on this journey of collaboration, they reinforce the significance of cultural exchange in bridging gaps and building lasting relationships between their peoples.
