Riyadh, December 1, 2023 - The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia clinched a decisive victory in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council elections for the 2024-2025 term, amassing an impressive 143 votes from member states in London.

The IMO, a United Nations specialized agency, entrusted with ensuring global shipping safety and security and mitigating ship-induced pollution, welcomed Saudi Arabia to its council. The Transport General Authority (TGA) emphasized that this election underscores the wise leadership's commitment and unwavering support for the maritime transport system, aligning seamlessly with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The TGA highlighted Saudi Arabia's proactive measures to protect the maritime environment, a pivotal factor contributing to this significant achievement. As an IMO Council member, Saudi Arabia is poised to actively participate in advancing the organization's initiatives and shaping international regulations governing global trade and maritime transport.

With a prominent standing in the regional maritime sector, Saudi Arabia boasts the leading maritime fleet and highly efficient ports globally, according to the TGA. The National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS) amplifies the Kingdom's commitment, outlining ambitious objectives to position the Saudi maritime sector as a global leader by 2030. The goals include handling 40 million containers annually, streamlining cargo procedures, and fostering marine tourism through cruise ships and coastal transportation.

Leveraging its strategic location as a hub bridging the East and West, Saudi Arabia aims to play a pivotal role in facilitating 13 percent of global trade passing through the Red Sea, solidifying its status as a vital maritime route.
