Riyadh, October 12, 2024 – The International Saudi Falcons and Hunting Exhibition, which took place from October 3 to 12 in Malham, just north of Riyadh, showcased a rich array of over 20 workshops and dialogue sessions led by both local and international experts in falconry. This annual event, organized by the Saudi Falcons Club, brought together enthusiasts and professionals from around the world to exchange knowledge and expertise on various aspects of falconry, conservation, and wildlife preservation.
One of the key highlights of the exhibition was a workshop focused on the remote tracking of the houbara bustard, a species integral to the ecosystem of the Arabian Peninsula. Dr. Olivier Combreau, head of the houbara program at the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve, shared valuable insights into the use of satellite technology to track the migration patterns of houbara bustards. He explained how these tracking operations have played a crucial role in identifying the environmental challenges faced by these birds in the wild and how such data has been instrumental in developing effective conservation strategies aimed at preserving the species.
In a separate dialogue session, Sultan Al-Mawash, a renowned falconry expert, discussed the significance of falcons and falconry in the Arabian Peninsula. Al-Mawash introduced the audience to various species of falcons native to the region and underscored the vital role played by the Saudi Falcons Club in safeguarding natural habitats and ensuring the preservation of falcon bloodlines. His presentation also emphasized the cultural and environmental importance of these majestic birds, as well as the programs and initiatives designed to protect their heritage.
The exhibition's workshops and sessions covered a wide range of topics, including technical innovations in falconry, legal frameworks governing falconry practices, and the broader theme of environmental sustainability. The event served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration, fostering a deeper understanding of the responsibilities tied to falconry and wildlife conservation in the region.
