Riyadh, March 30, 2025 – Saudi Arabia marks its second annual Saudi Green Initiative Day on March 27, celebrating the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) in 2021 by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the SGI.

SGI is a community-driven initiative focused on implementing effective and measurable environmental actions to improve the quality of life across Saudi Arabia, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

SGI combines environmental protection, energy transition, and sustainability efforts to reduce emissions, increase afforestation and land restoration, and safeguard the Kingdom’s land and sea. It takes a comprehensive approach to environmental efforts and plays a central role in regional and international collaborations for a sustainable global future.

SGI Day, marking the end of a month-long campaign, emphasizes the importance of collective action under the theme “Promoting a culture of environmental stewardship,” bringing together citizens, public institutions, the private sector, and non-profits to address environmental challenges.

Throughout March, communities across the Kingdom united to demonstrate their shared responsibility for sustainable change, supported by two SGI awareness campaigns across social media platforms.

The #GreenRamadan campaign encouraged people to show how they are observing Ramadan sustainably, using the hashtag to highlight efforts to reduce food waste, conserve water, save electricity, and more. On SGI Day, a live mosaic on the website showcased the sustainability efforts of individuals during Ramadan and will continue to feature new contributions beyond the holy month.

The #PawsToChangeChallenge, led by SGI’s mascot Namour, inspired Saudi youth to adopt simple, impactful sustainable actions and share them on social media during Ramadan.

SGI Day 2025 follows the success of the Saudi Green Initiative Forum held in Riyadh last December alongside the 16th session of the UNCCD “COP16 Riyadh” Conference. The forum served as a vital platform for fostering dialogue and sharing insights on environmental challenges and green transformation, with contributions from policymakers, business leaders, and experts.

With investments exceeding SAR 705 billion, SGI is driving over 85 initiatives across all 13 regions of the Kingdom and making significant progress toward its goals. In 2024, Saudi Arabia connected 6.6 GW of renewable energy to the grid, with a total of 44.2 GW currently under development. The Liquid Fuel Displacement Program, which operates four efficient natural gas power plants with a total capacity of 5.6 GW, also contributes to reducing emissions, supporting the Kingdom’s goal of an optimal energy mix for electricity production by 2030.

Efforts to combat desertification have resulted in the planting of 115 million trees and the rehabilitation of 118,000 hectares of degraded land—equivalent to more than 165,000 football fields by 2024. Additionally, over 7,500 endangered species have been successfully rewilded through more than 10 breeding and rewilding programs, including the Arabian oryx, Arabian and sand gazelles, ibex, houbara, and cheetahs.

These initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to building a sustainable future for future generations while promoting a thriving and sustainable economy, reinforcing its position in the global environmental landscape.
