Riyadh, November 24, 2024 – The sixth session of the Transport, Border Crossings, and Ports Committee under the Saudi-Iraqi Coordination Council was convened today via video conference, marking a significant step in the continued strengthening of bilateral ties between Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The session was led by Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, Saleh Al-Jasser, who was joined by Iraqi Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, along with committee members from both nations. This virtual meeting underscores the ongoing commitment of both countries to enhancing cooperation in key areas of transportation and logistics.
In his opening remarks, Minister Al-Jasser highlighted the committee's successful track record in previous sessions, noting the tangible results of their collaborative efforts in bolstering trade, transportation, and economic growth between the two nations. He emphasized several key milestones that have already contributed to the deepening of bilateral relations. These include the opening of the Jadidat Arar border, which has significantly facilitated the movement of goods between the two countries, easing trade flows and strengthening economic ties. Additionally, Al-Jasser pointed to the establishment of a dedicated Hajj lounge at the port, which began operating during the 1444 AH Hajj season, offering a streamlined and efficient experience for pilgrims traveling between the two countries.
Another important achievement highlighted by Al-Jasser was the resumption of direct flights between Saudi Arabia and Iraq. These air routes, connecting Jeddah to Baghdad and Erbil, as well as Dammam to Najaf, are now operated by airlines from both countries. The resumption of direct flights has further reinforced the people-to-people connectivity and deepened the economic and cultural links between the two nations.
Minister Al-Jasser also underscored the committee's ongoing efforts to advance the transportation and logistics sectors through a collaborative approach that includes training programs and the exchange of expertise. He reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the movement of goods and individuals across land, sea, and air, while prioritizing security, efficiency, and economic prosperity for both Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
During the course of the session, various topics of mutual interest were discussed, with a strong emphasis on continuing the implementation of recommendations from the previous council meeting. Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing programs and initiatives that promote trade, economic cooperation, and stronger ties in the fields of transportation, border management, and port infrastructure. These discussions reflect the shared commitment of both Saudi Arabia’s and Iraq’s leadership to further deepen their cooperation and build lasting partnerships in these critical sectors.
The successful meeting and continued dialogue are seen as essential steps toward achieving the broader vision of enhancing connectivity, economic collaboration, and regional integration between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, ultimately fostering greater prosperity for both nations. As both sides continue to work together, they aim to build on these foundational initiatives and drive future progress that will benefit not just the two countries but the wider region as a whole.
