Saudi Minister highlights environmental commitment under Vision 2030

Ahmed Saleh

Riyadh, March 05, 2024, Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli, emphasized the Kingdom's steadfast commitment to environmental and climate issues, underpinned by its pivotal role and significant regional and international responsibilities. This dedication, fostered through the Saudi Vision 2030 framework, has seen the Kingdom spearhead a series of local and regional initiatives aimed at elevating environmental stewardship.

Al-Fadhli's remarks came to light during the inauguration of the inaugural First International Conference on Dust and Sand Storms in Riyadh. The event, organized by the National Center for Meteorology, represented by the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, drew the participation of esteemed leaders, representatives from international organizations, as well as over 200 researchers and experts from both domestic and international spheres.

Highlighting the Kingdom's proactive stance, Al-Fadhli underscored key initiatives such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative Summit. These efforts culminated in the establishment of the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, announced by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Serving as a regional hub for information exchange and development, the center aligns with the objectives of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in combating dust and sand storms, earning recognition as one of the WMO's approved regional centers.

The conference served as a platform for constructive dialogue among leaders and decision-makers, aimed at fostering regional cooperation in data exchange, capacity building, and the development of an international cooperation framework. Moreover, discussions centered on aligning efforts with sustainable development goals, addressing underlying causes and challenges, and integrating dust and sand storm data pertinent to COP16 decisions, thereby bolstering support for affected communities. Another session delved into the nuanced aspects of dust description and characteristics, drawing insights from a cadre of academics and relevant specialists.

In essence, the conference represents a tangible outcome of the Kingdom's steadfast commitment to proactive environmental stewardship and underscores its pivotal role in advancing regional cooperation and global sustainability efforts.
