On October 10, 2024, the Saudi Broadcasting Authority (SBA) unveiled the "Sayma" platform, a significant initiative under the Digital Archive Center, recognized as one of the largest archival centers globally and the first of its kind in the Middle East dedicated to media materials. The launch event took place last week, presided over by Assistant Minister of Media Abdullah Al-Maghlouth, as part of the SBA's broader project initiatives.
The Sayma platform houses an extensive collection of over 1.2 million archived audio and visual (AV) materials, meticulously curated over more than six decades. This archive documents pivotal moments in the Kingdom’s history, including the first broadcast in Saudi Arabia, the initial telephone experience, and numerous landmark events that have shaped the nation’s development.
Designed to facilitate investment opportunities, Sayma aims to connect media content creators with global partners by showcasing and licensing its creative materials. The platform intends to empower both government and private entities to effectively market their media products, generating potential financial returns.
User experience is a priority for Sayma, which features electronic payment options for easy purchases and direct downloads, complemented by round-the-clock technical support. The platform also leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze viewer behavior, offering insights such as view counts, geographic demographics, and peak viewing times, enabling targeted content strategies.
In its ambition to serve as the unified global gateway for Saudi media materials, Sayma mirrors the functionality of leading international platforms that facilitate the purchase of media usage rights. To ensure copyright protection, the platform incorporates Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems, which prevent unauthorized redistribution and copying of content. Additionally, trademarks and watermarks are utilized to further safeguard the integrity of the materials housed within the archive.
