Riyadh, September 13, 2024 — Dr. Esam Alwagait, Director of the National Information Center at the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), presented awards today to the winners of the inaugural International AI Olympiad (IAIO). This prestigious competition was co-hosted by SDAIA, the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), and the International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI), with support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The IAIO, held as part of the third Global AI Summit (GAIN Summit) in Riyadh, featured an impressive display of talent from around the world. Over the course of three days, students from 25 countries competed in a variety of individual scientific tests. The competition saw eight students awarded gold medals, 16 receiving silver, and 20 earning bronze. Each participating country was represented by a team of up to four students, who tackled both theoretical and practical challenges, including scientific tests, experimental problem-solving with AI techniques, and hands-on demonstrations.
The IAIO aligns with SDAIA’s goal of establishing Saudi Arabia as a leader in data and artificial intelligence. Additionally, the event supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by emphasizing the importance of advanced technologies and fostering the skills and knowledge needed for future advancements.
