SFDA experts joined crucial meetings on global medical device standards

Riyadh, October 05, 2023, Experts and professionals from the Saudi Food & Drug Authority (SFDA) recently took part in significant meetings of the technical and international committees responsible for setting standards for medical devices and supplies. These meetings were integral components of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), convening in both Korea and Australia.


During these gatherings, discussions centered on a wide array of specifications and proposed technical modifications. The committees reviewed and adopted reports, scrutinized pivotal documents and draft projects, and formed sub-working teams to delve into projects related to artificial intelligence (AI). The SFDA team actively contributed to the preparation and review process, collaborating closely with teams from South Korea and the United States.


One noteworthy initiative involved specialists participating in the development of fundamental specifications concerning the safety and performance of electrical medical devices. This undertaking took place within the largest global working group of experts, and it aims to revamp and analyze these critical foundational features in light of advancements in AI, machine learning, and innovative technologies.


Furthermore, experts from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are poised to partake in an international project focusing on AI standards in medical imaging equipment. This collaborative effort will involve experts from China, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. It underscores the commitment of SFDA and its specialists to stay at the forefront of global standards and technological advancements in the field of medical devices and AI.
