According to the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, during the first half of 2023, Shanghai attracted more than 139 million domestic tourists, generating over 155 billion yuan (about $21.56 billion) in tourism income, representing an increase of over 100% year over year. The consumption of tourism in Shanghai during the first half of the year totaled 478.45 billion yuan, a 77% increase year over year, according to data from the card payment organization China UnionPay Organization. More than 22,000 commercial performances were held in Shanghai during the same time period, drawing close to 12 million spectators and generating 832 million yuan in box office receipts—a notable rise above the numbers seen prior to COVID-19.
