On October 13, 2024, Speaker of the Shura Council, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh, is set to lead the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's delegation at the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva. This significant event will gather hundreds of parliamentarians and representatives from various international organizations, fostering dialogue and collaboration on critical global issues.
In remarks to the press, Dr. Al-Sheikh emphasized that the Shura Council's participation exemplifies Saudi Arabia's commitment to actively engaging in international forums. He expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, for their vision in enhancing the Kingdom's influence on both regional and international stages.
Highlighting the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, Dr. Al-Sheikh noted the Shura Council's pivotal role in addressing pressing regional and global issues through various parliamentary activities and forums. This engagement is crucial for fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among nations.
This year’s assembly will focus on the theme of “Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) for a More Peaceful and Sustainable Future.” Discussions will be led by the Union’s four permanent committees, addressing how these critical areas can contribute to global stability and sustainability.
In addition to Dr. Al-Sheikh, the Secretary General of the Shura Council, Mohammed bin Dakhil Al-Mutairi, will participate in the meeting of National Parliaments’ Secretaries. Other Council members will engage in the Standing Committees on UN Affairs, International Peace and Security, Democracy and Human Rights, and Sustainable Development, ensuring a broad representation of Saudi interests in these vital discussions.
Dr. Al-Sheikh is also scheduled to attend the 37th emergency conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union, where he will be joined by key Arab parliamentary figures, including Shura Council member Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Muhanna. This conference will further facilitate collaboration among Arab nations in addressing shared challenges and enhancing parliamentary cooperation.
