Specialized medical team to perform complex surgery on Tanzanian conjoined twins

Riyadh, October 04, 2023, In accordance with the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a specialized medical team is set to perform a complex separation surgery on Hassan and Hussein, conjoined twins from Tanzania. This intricate procedure will take place at the King Abdullah Specialist Children Hospital, located within the King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh.


Under the meticulous supervision of Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), this surgery is expected to span 16 hours and encompass nine distinct phases. A dedicated team consisting of 35 doctors, specialists, as well as technical and nursing personnel will undertake this challenging endeavor.


Hassan and Hussein, two-year-old twins weighing a combined 13.5 kilograms, arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on August 23, 2023, from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.


This milestone surgery marks the 59th case within the Saudi program for the separation of conjoined twins, which has been overseeing such cases from 24 different countries since its inception in 1990.


Dr. Al Rabeeah extended heartfelt gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince for their unwavering support and diligent oversight of the conjoined twins' program.
