Türk urges probe into alleged violations of humanitarian law in Gaza-Israel

Geneva, November 16, 2023, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has urged a thorough investigation into alleged ongoing serious violations of international humanitarian law in both the Gaza Strip and Israel. Türk emphasized the need for complete accountability for these violations, regardless of the party responsible, during a briefing to diplomats following his recent visits to Egypt and Jordan. He underscored the enduring resolution of conflicts through the promotion of justice, accountability, and human rights.

Türk emphasized that breaches of international humanitarian law, including war crimes, committed by one party should not exempt the other from adhering to the established principles of the law of war. Additionally, he expressed shared concerns with many of his counterparts regarding the potential for the current situation to escalate, leading to broader implications for the Middle East region.
