Nairobi, April 15, 2024, Heavy rains in Tanzania over the past two weeks have resulted in devastating floods, claiming the lives of 58 individuals, according to statements from the Tanzanian government reported by the AP. The coastal region bore the brunt of the impact, with 126,831 people affected by the floods.
In response to the crisis, government spokesperson Mobhare Matinyi announced on Sunday that essential supplies, including food, had been distributed to those affected. Additionally, Tanzania intends to construct 14 dams to mitigate future flooding incidents.
This calamity in Tanzania is part of a broader pattern of heavy rains affecting East Africa. Neighboring Kenya has also experienced severe flooding, resulting in the loss of at least 13 lives. The region's authorities are working to address the immediate impact of the floods and implement measures to enhance resilience against such natural disasters in the future.
